The Place for Your Next Get-Together or Field Trip

Kindergarteners relax after lunch with a pumpkin story.

I can’t think of any mazes we’ve done so far that have been more fun than our “CAMPING ACROSS AMERICA” Big Maze this year!! From grade school ages to adults, it is a terrific opportunity to stress team building & work on physical fitness. It is both a workout for the mind as well as the body. Many of the Vermont Standards skills may be addressed with this type of adventure. When kids get a bit bigger & outgrow the Mini Maze, they have the option of just doing the first half of the Big Maze & coming out the Early Exit at the Grassy Knoll if the whole maze would be too much of a challenge. As always, we have the GPS mapping available so all those with smart phones “should” be able to maneuver their way through without too much difficulty. For the adults don’t worry……the kids will help you with that!

We have the Mini Maze available for the Littles that is just the right amount of adventure for those shorter legs. There is a little Garden Bridge in there along with some other surprises to make it a fun journey to meander through. Click to learn more…

Our Livestock Barn is a great place to introduce children of all ages to farm animals & teach them a little about each breed & farming in general. For school groups, if you’d like an actual presentation on farm animals or the type of farming practices we use here to correlate with what you might be studying in school, just let us know. We can usually accommodate whatever topic & age group you have. We particularly like to stress the significance of heritage breeds for today’s agriculture as well as the importance of locally grown foods. In our Livestock Barn we also have HATHAWAY’S HENS, OUR SINGING CHICKEN SHOW!! There are a couple different shows with chickens singing songs & interactive activities for the kids. Due to the concerns of Bird Flu earlier this year, we do not have any real feathered friends (chickens or ducks) in our barn this year. Our Milking Cow Contest is very popular with a dairy cow background that is a perfect photo opportunity as is the Little Farmer’s Corner where the kids can play with farm toys.

busOver the past several years we have had 100’s of different groups per year visit our Farm & Corn Maze. These groups include schools…….pre-schools through colleges both in school & after school groups, scouts, camps, church groups, 4-H clubs, boys & girls clubs, birthday parties & more. We are an ideal setting for adventurous explorers of all ages!

This is still a working Vermont farm where we raise some beef cattle & grow the feeds for all our animals. We are maple producers & sell hay all around New England, mainly to horse people. We also have recently started a Greenhouse known as The Greenhouse @ Hathaway Farm. We sell bedding plants, both veggie starters & flowers in the spring. We have always been engaged in agri-tourism (before it ever had that label) way back when we were a dairy farm, to help teach both children & adults about farming & the importance of knowing where your food comes from. We feel it’s important for people to have that connection. Today we have had many grandparents come with their families who have told us how they had gone on a field trip to our farm when they were children & they still remember how the barn was set up with the dairy cows & all the fun things they did here! AMAZING!

Helpful Tips

A few things to keep in mind in preparing for your trip to the Farm:

  1. Weather: The Farm is open weather permitting. Muddy, slippery ground conditions after rainstorms could possibly force us to stay closed even after the rain has stopped. If the forecast is for 90 degrees or higher for the day, we also close. We will post conditions each day on our Home page (by 9am). Please call ahead if you have any questions about the weather in our area. If we need to close the farm due to weather on your scheduled day, you can reschedule your group, but we do stay open for light rain.
  2. Attire: Dress in layers for changing weather conditions. It may be hot or windy. We strongly advise good sturdy footwear like sneakers or other closed toe shoes.
  3. Don’t forget sunscreen & have your smartphones all fully charged so you can access the mapping.
  4. During the week we only sell cold drinks & in August we have snow cones available too, so you are welcome to bring your own lunches of course. Our Snack Shack is open on weekends beginning September 6th so there are food & drinks available for purchase during this time. Because of this, bringing in food is not allowed on weekends with the possible exception of birthday parties. There are always picnic tables available.
  5. Our policy with schools is that if there are children who do not follow the rules anywhere on the Farm, they will need to spend their time here on the bus with a chaperone. This is non-negotiable.
  6. You must have one assigned chaperone per 5 children.
  7. For everyone’s safety & enjoyment at the farm, please be sure to review the Do’s and Don’ts with your group before your arrival.
